Rhinoplasty is a meaningful decision, whether it’s for appearance, breathing, or both. But once the surgery is done, what does recovery actually involve?
Dr. James Lowe, a triple board-certified plastic surgeon in Oklahoma City, has guided countless patients through rhinoplasty recovery. With over 20 years of experience and an on-site surgical suite, he provides hands-on care at every stage.
Here’s what recovery really looks like, week by week.
Week 1: Taking It Slow
The first week is all about rest. You’ll likely feel stuffy and look swollen and bruised (especially around the eyes). That’s completely normal.
Dr. Lowe usually places a splint on the outside of the nose to protect it and sometimes also uses internal packing. Expect to breathe through your mouth for these first few days.
Most people stay home, sleep upright, and keep cold compresses nearby. Around day six or seven, the splint comes off, and Dr. Lowe will evaluate your healing progress.
Weeks 2–3: Starting to Look (and Feel) Better
By now, bruising usually fades, and the swelling starts to go down significantly. Your nose will still feel a little firm or puffy, but you’ll start to see early changes in shape.
This is a good stage to ease back into things. People often go back to work after 10–14 days, especially if their job isn’t physically demanding. You can walk and move around more, but skip the gym for now.
Weeks 4–6: Getting Back to Your Routine
By this point, you should feel more like yourself. Many patients are cleared to resume light exercise, and daily routines become easier to manage. Social activities often feel more comfortable now that much of the swelling has improved. While some puffiness may still be visible (especially around the tip of your nose), it’s typically noticeable only to you and Dr. Lowe.
Beyond 6 Weeks: Final Results Take Time
Healing under the surface takes time, even if your nose looks fully recovered on the outside. The tip often stays slightly swollen for months.
Most patients see full results somewhere between six and 12 months post-op. It’s a slow process, but a worthwhile one.
